Best Siding Materials for New York Weather

Cedar, fiber cement, vinyl, or engineered wood — what actually holds up to Long Island salt, sun, and nor'easters.

Long Island throws a lot at a house: salt air on the South Shore, brutal sun on south-facing walls, nor'easter rain driven sideways, and twenty freeze-thaw cycles every winter. Here's how the most common siding materials actually perform here.

Cedar shingles

The Hamptons classic. Natural cedar weathers to a beautiful silver-gray and lasts 30+ years when properly installed with stainless fasteners and good flashing. Expect to wash and re-stain every 5–7 years if you want to hold a color.

Fiber cement (Hardie, Allura)

The most forgiving choice for our climate. Won't rot, won't burn, holds paint for 15+ years, and shrugs off salt air. Heavier and slower to install than vinyl, but the long-term cost is excellent.

Engineered wood (LP SmartSide)

Looks like real wood, installs like fiber cement, costs less. Holds paint well and has good impact resistance — useful in storm-prone areas. Needs careful installation around penetrations to avoid moisture issues.

Vinyl

Affordable and low-maintenance, but the cheaper grades fade and warp on south- and west-facing walls within 10–15 years. If you go vinyl, spec a premium insulated profile and a quality installer — the difference is enormous.

Natural wood clapboard

Beautiful on Colonial and farmhouse styles but the highest maintenance option. Best with a back-primed, rain-screen installation and a serious paint schedule.

Our recommendation

For most Suffolk County homes, fiber cement or cedar shingle gives the best balance of looks, longevity, and resale value. We'll walk your house and recommend what fits the architecture, your budget, and how long you plan to stay.
